Group Activities!

Hello

Lately, since Ted has been so good about sending us our group shots, I thought I'd just post them here! ^_^ It's rare to get group shots from us that are taken with a SLR camera.. ;) Haha.. Usually they are all "zi pai" (自拍) shots.=P

A wide-angle lens was used, hence the slight distortions at the edges of the image.=)

In Holland with the tulips.^_^

At the Tappan "Motel"! Hee.

That night was one of GREAT food!!! Chenli made the most DELICIOUS Shanghai-style 狮子头!!! SO GOOD. I was watching her make it so hopefully I can try to recreate it? HEEHEE! xD And Guo Lu made the most DELICIOUS Sichuan-style 干扁四季豆!!! SO GOOD ALSO. I also tried to steal her cooking secrets. ;) Hahaha. 幸せ!!!~ And I contribued Lime-Honey-Garlic Baked Chicken.=P

Memorial Day Weekend at Cedar Point!

Hello!!

Let me finally blog about CEDAR POINT!! ^_^ We went there on Sunday over Memorial Day Weekend and it was such a fabulous day!

Anyway.. What is Memorial Day all about you might wonder?

From Wikipedia:
Memorial Day is a United States Federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (in 2008 on May 26). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who perished while in military service to their country. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

Thanks to that, we got a long weekend!

The entrance to the Cedar Point parking area!!! ^_^ Parking for one day is $10..

The view of Cedar Point with Lake Erie from the road leading to it!!! ^_^ It's pretty ne? And so many rollercoasters!!! xD

According to Wikipedia:
Cedar Point is a 364 acre (1.5 km²) amusement park located in Sandusky, Ohio, U.S. on a narrow peninsula jutting into Lake Erie. It currently holds the world record for most roller coasters with 17, one of them being the world's second tallest and second fastest roller coaster, Top Thrill Dragster, which reaches speeds of 120 mph and a height of 420 feet. Cedar Point is also the only amusement park with four roller coasters that are taller than 200 feet (61 m).

As of 2008 Cedar Point will be the only park in the world with 76 rides, becoming the park with the most rides. The park also has a mile-long white sand beach, two water parks (Soak City and Castaway Bay, an indoor waterpark (which also includes a hotel service), two marinas, several hotels, and "Challenge Park" featuring attractions such as go-karts and miniature golf.

Known as "America's Roller Coast", Cedar Point has been voted "Best Amusement Park in the World" by Amusement Today for the past ten years.

^_^ You definitely know you're in for a good time when you read something like that.. Hahaha.

Cedar Point's mascots are the Peanuts characters and they are all over the park.=) There's a whole area called Camp Snoopy for kids and another called Planet Snoopy! ^_^ They've got Peanuts-themed rides and such. Kawaii!!

When you enter the park, you are absolutely plunged into what you know will be FUN.=) This theme park has everything for everyone, but the main attractions will always be the roller coasters.=) This is a great place for kids, teens and parents.=)

All the girls while waiting in line for our first ride of the day: RAPTOR!

FINALLY! Kevin is SMILING! Hahahaha. While still in line for Raptor.=P

The rides we took:
- Raptor (roller coaster)
- Blue Streak (roller coaster)
- Corkscrew (roller coaster)
- Gemini (roller coaster)
- Magnum XL-200 (roller coaster)
- Mantis (roller coaster)
- Millennium Force (roller coaster)
- Wicked Twister (roller coaster)
- Top Thrill Dragster (roller coaster)
- Power Tower (thrill ride)
- Snake River Falls (water ride)
- Thunder Canyon (water ride)
- Cedar Downs Racing Derby (family ride)
- Midway Carousel (family ride)
- Turnpike Cars (family ride)
- Lolli Swing (kids ride)

Want to take in future:
- Mean Streak (roller coaster)
- Maverick (roller coaster)
- Iron Dragon (roller coaster)
- Demon Drop (thrill ride)

Hmm. We actually took a shocking number of rides. Hahaha.=P But we didn't manage to fulfill our plan of taking all 17 rollercoasters.=( O well.

After lunch.. ^_^ I was simply fainting from hunger, and was made very dizzy by Raptor because I didn't eat breakfast..

Power Tower!!! It's the type where it ascends rapidly, then drops you.. -_-" Very unexciting though I was really scared at first.

One of the longest lines at the park was at Top Thrill Dragster, the 2nd fastest rollercoaster in the world!!! =D It's a 90 degree ascent, followed by 2 seconds of hanging horror, finished off with a 90 degree descent.=D

Masking our nerves behind beaming faces while we approached the loading area of Top Thrill Dragster..

A view from the bottom, you can see the steepness of the track.O__o! The whole ride was over in 20 seconds, so fast that you can't feel a thing.

Camp Snoopy!! Kawaii ne? xD

A view of the horrible high and steep ascent of Millennium Force!!! Haha.. I kept going, "waittt why is it taking so long to get to the top?! LIHUI!!! xP xP xP" You can see the carriage making the slow climb up..

We conquered it!!! =D This was a FANTASTIC ride.=D =D =D Now I know why it's one of the most popular in the whole park.

The last ride of the day.. The Carousel! =) One of the oldest structures in the park. It's pretty when lit up at night.=)

While in line for the carousel.=)

It was a great day.=) I think we should go back again!! HAHA. If only to ride the roller coasters I didn't get to take the last time..=P And to take the wet rides early in the day so you don't freeze to death at night..=P

cheers
*[-witchstone-]*

PS: I've updated my food blog recently! And you can find there our IRON CHEF chronicles!! =D I've just blogged about our SHRIMP BATTLE, next time, it'll be CHERRY TOMATO!!! ^_^

A Successful Dinner!

Hello

After 1 night of success, 1 night of failure and 1 lunch of laziness, we've hit the jackpot tonight with another night of success. ;)

Definition of success:
- Food was pretty good despite this being a first attempt.
- Food was cooked quickly and with minimal preparation work.
- We could eat dinner long before the sun set [ie: we could eat at 7/8 rather than 8/9]!!!

The first night of success:

Featuring my kawaii donburi bowls that I bought on sale in Urban Outfitters, I present to you OYAKODON! [親子丼]

They were surprisingly easy to make [it would have been even easier if I had the right pan but o well.] and I just followed this youtube video:

It is from a series called "cooking with dog". The voiceover is hilarious! =P The recipe is pretty good and I omitted sake [which would probably give a fragrance.. Maybe I should have used shaoxing wine? Haha..] because I didn't have any. I also made more sauce because I received a request..=P

They were really fast to make although the rice presented us with some problems because erm.. I don't really know how to cook Japanese rice.^_^" There are quite a few steps to it, including soaking and draining.. O well. The rice turned out okay after a few rescue attempts.=P

The easy parts of the meal
- Cooking the topping for oyakodon
- Cutting up the seaweed, spring onions and onions

The hard parts of the meal
- Deboning the damn chicken
- Saving the rice

The second night of success:

Another simple meal that I came up with on my way home from class.

Garlic and Cherry Tomato Pasta with stir-fried xiaobaicai and Pan-seared Whitefish from Whole Foods.^_^

The pasta was pretty successful even though it was my first time tossing the pasta directly in the pan with the sauce and the fish was really successful despite this being my first time searing fish and second time working with fish in general.=P

The garlic-butter-味噌-mushroom sauce I made to go with the fish! [That's miso by the way, for those who can't read the Japanese..] It was a totally experimental sauce since I couldn't find a recipe online... I just threw stuff into the pan and hoped that my combination of stuff wouldn't turn out too badly. In the end, it was quite a success I must say! Haha.. The mushrooms overpowered the miso a bit so maybe I won't add mushrooms next time but I have to say.. I think the sauce would go great on pasta. ;)

Garlic Butter Miso Mushroom Sauce

No proportions sorry! I just poured stuff into the pan..
Ingredients
Butter
Minced Garlic
Sliced Mushrooms
Shiromiso [I guess akamiso would work too but I have no idea]
Mirin
Black Pepper
Soy Sauce
Water

Melt butter and then stir-fry the garlic a little before adding the mushrooms. Stir till the mushrooms are almost cooked before putting in the rest of the ingredients. Add water for desired thickness and simmer till your desired texture. Serve with panseared whitefish. [White fish prepared by sprinkling salt and pepper over the fish and then searing it in a pan with oil and a bit of butter.]

The easy parts of the meal
- Defrosting and cutting up the fish
- Cooking the pasta

The hard parts of the meal
- Making the sauce because I was worried it would turn out badly

Ahh. I hope that we can continue our trend of fast and delicious meals in future. I hate wasting time in the kitchen slowly cooking when I can cook and eat quickly before I go study.-_-"

I wish I had money to buy fish more often!!! ^_^ It's a nice treat though! I love Whole Foods!

cheers

Springing in Spring!

Hello!

^_^ I finished my first exam of this semester today so I'm in a good mood.=D [This does not, in any way, reflect upon what I will get for the exam. That sort of information is totally irrelevant in this context.] I'm baking brownies! Yay!

Anyway, today is another BEAUTIFUL day. A bit windy and cold but nevertheless, beautiful!!! ^_^

I took these pictures on another sunny day that was slightly warmer than today.=P But still, they SORT OF recreate what today is like!!! ^_^ I love spring when it isn't raining.=)

The Clock Tower by the MLB and Hill Auditorium!

The Diag when everyone comes out to enjoy the sun!

An afternoon nap under the shady trees.=)

Beautiful tulips are blooming everywhere right now.=) Along with a whole host of other gorgeous spring flowers!

Besides the gorgeous beauty of Ann Arbor's university campus, here are some shots at the absolutely amazing Lake Michigan beach in Holland, Michigan.=)

The pier, at the end are tons of fishermen and people just walking around and enjoying the scenery.=)

Fishermen out in their boat on the lake in the sunset.=) It's almost 9pm by the way, hence the setting sun.

A wide view of the pier.^_^ The sand at the beach is amazingly soft and smooth by the way.. I definitely should go visit Rachel again and play at the beach! ^_^

I'm afraid I'm not doing the scenery much justice with my terribly amateurish shots.. =X I picked the best ones I had already and I still feel that they don't capture the ... awe-inspiring scenes we saw in real life..

Besides scenery in Michigan, we've been cooking for ourselves and have already had several larger gatherings.=D It's fun to cook for a larger number of people [max 6-8 is the best] but the preparation work is tough too.xP Still, I love cooking and despite all the trials and tribulations, have had a few successes! ^_^ Of course, this couldn't be done without the help of my friends and friendly kitchen co-workers! Hehe.

Steamed Minced Pork on top of Fish Tofu.^_^ The minced pork was leftover from our wanton making. Delicious!

Due to requests, custard puffs made with chouquette dough! ^_^ It's basically the same thing but I like my custard puff to be a bit softer than chouquettes.=P I must learn to make the Beard Papa/Zettai Kareshi versions!!! [ie: The crackly-top Japanese version that is huge and filled with the most gorgeously smooth and rich vanilla bean pastry cream.]

Courtesy of Ted, these are just some of the pineapple tarts we made as a thank-you gift to Rachel's family for letting us invade their home once again.^_^ They were delicious by the way, John Yap's family's recipe is fabulous!!! Now, if only I could remember my own family's recipe.. Ahem ahem.

With all this cooking, I am determined to learn all the Cantonese dishes I can remember [or write down] once I get home! ^_^ Especially how to make soup. *coughs* It'll be useful in winter.;) Of course, I also want to learn to make all the Nonya dishes from daiguma! =D =D =D Ahh!! I LOVE COOKING. And eating of course. But nothing can beat the process of creation when a lump of something can turn into something beautiful that will make somebody happy.^_^

Ahh.. The warmth and richness of the chocolate is drifting over here, the smell leaking out of the oven.^_^ The texture of the brownie batter was rather different today from the usual but.. Let's see how it turns out.=)

Anyway, all this spring weather calls for a new template which I will work on.. erm.. soon! ^_^ When I'm not cooking, doing my work or updating the food blog, I will work on it.;)

cheers

A Recap of Spring so far...

Hello

Since I have been so tardy at posting, I shall do all of the things I've been doing in one fell swoop! ^_^ With the help of my beloved Picasa and laziness, here's a little recap of what I've been doing...

A trip to FRANKENMUTH, Michigan!

We went to Frankenmuth for lunch while continuing to shop at Birch Run!! ^_^ The town is absolutely GORGEOUS in Spring and full of retirees, so you basically have the whole place to yourself.=)

A trip to CHICAGO, Illinois!

We went to Millennium Park, The Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, the Millennium Mile, Navy Pier, the park with Buckingham Fountain... Chicago is beautiful!!! ^_^ You can see more photos on my Facebook.=)

A trip to HOLLAND, Michigan!

Visiting Rachel and going for the annual Tulip Festival has been one of the best weekends ever!! ^_^ We went crazy over tulips, crazy over funfair food [it's so bad but SO good!] and basically had a ton of fun!

We even went to the beach by Lake Michigan.=) It was so beautiful and I was totally awe-inspired by how gorgeous it was in the sunset. [The sun sets at around 8.30-9pm?] There are some good parts about being in a more remote location like Michigan, you're near these beautiful lakes.^_^

All these are selected images. There are tons more on Facebook!

Of course, we haven't just been travelling and having fun.. We've been cooking and eating a lot too!!!

Clockwise from top left: Banana Pan Cake with homemade strawberry sauce, Orange-soy-honey pork ribs, Shrimp Dong Fen, Custard Puffs, Lemon-Garlic-Butter Shrimp, Linguini with tomato sauce, Lapcheong mushroom rice, Steamed Fish Tofu with minced pork topping, homemade wantons.

And this isn't all of it.=P You can see more photos on my Facebook! ^_^

And there's been so many beautiful spring days with gorgeous flowers and whatnot that I haven't been able to resist whipping my camera out at every opportune moment.=)

Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous spring flowers!!! ^_^ The weather has been glorious as well, sunny skies and windy days.=) We've had our fair share of rain as well, and the strong winds of Michigan have made my umbrella totally useless.=( I have to comfort myself with the thought that with more rain, come more flowers and fruit! ^_^

Alright. I have an exam coming up. I must study!! *flees* We had laksa for dinner this evening.=) Yummy!

cheers

So this week will feature an American Music Special! =D

First up is...

Chris Brown! Rachel's future husband [unless Kevvers decides to buck up and get that diamond necklace]!

[from Wikipedia] Christopher Maurice "Chris" Brown (born May 5, 1989) is an American hip hop, pop and R&B singer-songwriter, dancer, music video director and actor. In late 2005, he released his first studio album, Chris Brown, which spawned the Billboard Hot 100 number-one debut single, "Run It!" which was produced by Scott Storch and featured Juelz Santana. The album also produced two other top ten singles: "Yo (Excuse Me Miss)" and "Say, Goodbye." Brown’s second studio album, Exclusive was released worldwide in November 2007. It has spawned his second US number one hit, "Kiss Kiss" which was produced by T-Pain, who was also featured in the song . The third single, "With You", has reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and has entered into the top ten in several countries across the world, becoming one of his most successful worldwide releases to date. The second single, "Kiss Kiss", was nominated for the 50th Annual Grammy Awards in the category for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

He has some pretty good music and slick dance moves. ;) Do check out his videos!

Next up!

The lead singer of Maroon 5, Adam Levine! [from Wikipedia] Adam Noah Levine (born March 18, 1979) is an American singer. Currently, he is the lead singer and guitarist for the pop group Maroon 5.

[from Wikipedia] Maroon 5 is a Grammy Award-winning American pop rock band originating from Los Angeles, California. Comprising five members: Adam Levine (vocals, guitar), James Valentine (guitar, vocals), Jesse Carmichael (keyboards, vocals), Mickey Madden (bass guitar), and Matt Flynn (drums). The band is best known for hit songs including "Harder to Breathe", "This Love", "She Will Be Loved", "Sunday Morning", "Makes Me Wonder", "Wake Up Call", "Won't Go Home Without You", and "If I Never See Your Face Again".

I love Maroon 5's music even if they could be dubbed mainstream.=P

Who's next?

Someone you definitely cannot forget when you're talking about American music! ^_^ Justin Timberlake! [from Wikipedia] Justin Randall Timberlake (born January 31, 1981) is an American pop singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer and actor. Justin has won six Grammy Awards as well as an Emmy Award.

Justin Timberlake came to fame as one of the lead singers of pop boy band 'N Sync, whose launch was financed by con man Lou Pearlman. In 2002, he released his debut solo album, Justified, which sold more than 7 million copies worldwide. Timberlake's second solo release, FutureSex/LoveSounds, was released in 2006 with the U.S. number-one hit singles "SexyBack", "My Love", and "What Goes Around... Comes Around". The album also spawned three additional U.S. top twenty hits ("Summer Love", "LoveStoned", and "Until the End of Time") making it the first time a male artist has achieved six top twenty hits from one album since Michael Jackson did so from 1991–1992, with his album Dangerous. As of January 2008, FutureSex/LoveSounds has sold more than 8 million copies. With his first two albums, Timberlake has sold more than 18 million records worldwide alone, as well as more than 50 million copies as one of the two lead singers in NSYNC. He has started a record label called Tennman Records and a fashion label, William Rast.

And my favourite song! xD This is the performance at the Victoria's Secret fashion show.=)

And of course, how can I forget Mr Bunny?

Kawaii!

Okay. I must run. Toodles!
cheers

in spring you have flowers

Hello

Seeing as I have a huge backlog of photo posts, allow me to start sharing with you the joys of spring weather! [Of course, it's gloomy and rainy right now, but why think about that when you have sunny days to look forward to?]

A walk to the Diag while they were setting it up for graduation.=) So sunny! Look at everyone! They were in shorts!

And of course, I spotted this totally cute poster!!! ^_^

The sakura are in full bloom!!! ^_^ Okay, most of them are gone since, as you know, sakura have finite lives and remind us of the ephemeral qualities of life. I have more photos but those will be in later posts.^_^

Early spring brings beautiful flowers as well, as you can tell with this gorgeous blue pansy! [At least, I think it's a pansy.] They were planted all around the diag, blue and yellow to represent the school colours during the graduation ceremony.

Cool red flowers.. I have no idea what they are called but I've never seen them before! ^_^ They grow on trees and surround the diag.. and a lot of other places too.

Pretty blue flowers!!! ^_^ They grow in abundance and add this happy bright blue to fields of green grass.

Have you ever seen buds before? I certainly haven't.. Totally fascinating! And these buds have bloomed into the most GORGEOUS flowers ever.=D =D =D

Very interestingly shaped leaves! They look like venus fly trap leaves...

And these gorgeous white flowers are going to burst into bloom soon.^_^

I love spring! Besides the rain, there's absolutely amazing weather. It gets a little warm at times but overall, it's wonderful!!! ^_^ I don't really want to go back to summer...

We just returned from Holland, Michigan yesterday and sadly it rained. But! We did manage to see some beautiful sights on Saturday.=) Wee! And we went shopping since it was raining. HEHE. =D As I will be slowly uploading photos due to school commitments, I apologise for all the delays.

I hope everyone is enjoying this period of spring as much as I am!!! ^_^ Or even more, since I still have to deal with the horror that is school.-_-" But happiness is always around the corner in the form of cooking.=) I currently have ribs happily marinating in the refrigerator!!!

And I want to kill the stupid website that runs the SSA website because I can't post on the editor's blog! Hrmph.

cheers
