The World's Youngest Women Billionaires

Hello

I found this article on the world's youngest women billionaires on MSN.com :
[LINK!]

The shocking thing is, out of the 20 women who are billionaires, only THREE are self-made billionaires, and the rest of them are heiresses!!!

Of course, it's not all about being self-made because you know, maintaining that family fortune by running the family business is no small task but still. I RAWR with indignation.-_-"

Is it just that women are less entrepreneurial? Or less ambitious? Or have fewer opportunities? There's one Chinese and one Russian billionaires who started out working in factories but somehow, managed to open their own companies. So I don't think it's so much about your previous status but more about your drive and ambition to get somewhere through your own means.=)

And for some reason, the article also focuses on whether these women are married. Seriously. If you're a bachelor looking for a rich wife, this is not the place to scout for one.-_-" Also, does it really matter if they are married or not? People should stop defining women by whether they are married and start focusing on their achievements.

We studied something about this in Sociology. Except it was about women and sport which I find incredibly boring. But o well. Same concept somehow.

Anyway, I doubt anyone noticed but I reduced my wishlist on the right *points*. =) Aren't you proud of me. I either acquired the desired item or deleted it off the list because I really should stop lusting after things I cannot afford. Or after things I don't really need.

I'm updating more often than usual! What a nice change.=D
cheers

Photography by YOU

Hello..

After once again appreciating the beauty that is having friends who willingly translate long and difficult Japanese blogs, I have to share these beautiful photos by YOU, the guitarist from GacktJOB.=)

And no. I'm not going to fangirl in this post. He's really talented, and I don't think fangirling about it will cement the point more than his photos:

Isn't this pretty? It's of the post-Matsuri festivities..

It's summer after all, and natsu matsuri are what summers are all about ne? =) I wish we could have one here.. It'd be so fun!!!

This is my favourite photo in the series.^_^ Somehow, I always love looking and taking photos of these pathways.. They seem to indicate something somehow.. =S But anyway..

The last photo in the series.=)

All copyright of the photos belongs to YOU and thanks for posting it pixiezdust! ^_^ Hee.

Isn't it strange? Despite the lonely feel of the empty venue, and the closed-up stalls are all that remain of a bustling matsuri, the photos don't seem to convey a sense of solitary emptiness at all. Instead, they seem to evoke some other emotions..

I want to try taking such photos!!! Although all these beautiful photos are always taken with DSLRs [and thus convey that particular feel that professional cameras can bring to a photo], I believe that a good angle and a good shot is a good angle and good shot no matter what camera is used.^_^ So I will continute to try my darndest to get good pictures with my little Ixus! =D

It'd be nice to have a DSLR though.=) Too bad I'm too poor.. and too lazy to carry all that equipment around..=P I will continue trying to take yummilicious food pictures.^_^ YEA!

Speaking of food, I just found this dorama about traditional Japanese food that incorporates the process of production within the dorama!!! *_*!!

The Japanese are masterful at food presentation and food photography/videography... Just look at that.. *drools* It reminds me of those absolutely gorgeous anime close-ups of food in Ouran Koukou Hostobu and xxxHOLiC [1st and 2nd season]. xD xD xD

Except of course, this is way better because it's REAL food!!! =D

Ahh. Such inspirations.=D Look at this. It's.. beautiful! It's so pristine, yet the food looks so good!

I am OFFICIALLY inspired.

My new checklist of improvements: [a partial checklist of course, for I really need to improve myself in far too many areas]
- Food Presentation
- Taste of food
- Originality/Creativity
- Food Photography

GANBARIMASU!!!

cheers

Intense...

Hello

Ahhh. My fangirl bowl of happiness is once again brimming and overflowing!!! xD xD xD

I've finally finished Darker Than Black which is so. so. Good. O my goodness. It's exciting, the storyline is smart, it's unique [which is more than I can say about a lot of other anime..], has great voice acting, deep characters and ... Gosh. In my fangirl-mode-ON! stage, I could go on forever!

I really loved it though. And highly recommend it. It's a brilliant anime, some parts didn't work out very well and sometimes I wondered where the anime was going but the conclusion was... sad but at the same time, it reminded me of Chobits. It's one of those dilemmas people face that they have to decide on and it's never an easy choice. Thankfully, episode 26 [the very last episode] was one of complete retardedness and fangirly happiness so it quelled the somber mood a little.

It totally ruined my sleep-early plan but hello. It's Darker Than Black.xD xD xD I am very much forgiven.

I've been watching fairly intense stuff lately.. Fuurin Kazan is building up to its climatic battle at Kawanakajima, Last Friends was totally like intense all the way, Darker Than Black is beyond fabulous, Kure-nai was excellent stuff, Code Geass R2 is progressing on in its terribly dramatic ways, ... The other stuff I'm watching is good too, just that they can't quite compare.. Not yet anyway.

Ahh.. Darker Than Black.. And all the other fabulous things I'm watching.. It'll make everything else seem so dull! =( I'm looking forward to Fall Anime though.=D Summer anime has been nothing to scream about [as usual] so I'm hoping Japan will redeem itself in the Fall. ;) If nothing else, it'll be a good break from school.

The titles have already been released I think, because I remember noting which ones I want to look out for.. But perhaps not everything has been released yet..?

Hmm.. I just want to revel in the happiness that is Darker Than Black for now.=) It was a great thrill ride..

cheers

We're All Humans..

Hello

Today, in my haze of tiredness, I thought about something someone told me in Ann Arbor one afternoon when I was hurrying home from a bout of a shopping frenzy in Borders..

"Hi! Would you like to sign this?"

[Thinks it's for the US elections]

"Sorry.. I'm not a US citizen.."

[hurries off and hears the person calling after]

"O no honey.. It's for human rights.. It doesn't matter if you aren't American, we're all humans, we should all help one another!"

I had walked too far away by then to turn around. I feel kind of guilty about it.=S

I'm so tired..=( I can't wait for the FWP Formal to be over and then I can party and sleep all I want without worrying about an overflowing inbox.. And then I can bake in peace without worrying about deadlines..

sleepily,

Tuesday Special - Advertisements by iTunes!

Hello!~

Seeing as I've been so fascinated by the new Coldplay song recently, I thought it appropriate to place some iTunes commercials here... Especially since Viva La Vida was released exclusively on iTunes.

Plus iTunes is such a cultural phenomenon that it's hard to ignore! =P

Coldplay - Viva La Vida

iTunes commercials seem to be marked by vibrant colours and a lot of movement! =) Probably reflecting the enthusiasm and energy of it's presumably youthful audience?

As expected, iPods, iShuffles, iPodNanos and so forth all feature prominently as well..=P

Well. This was a totally random post! Haha.. I doubt I'll be posting a Midweek Men entry tomorrow..X__X I did post on the food blog though!

cheers

Red Cliff / 赤壁

Hello

Today I went to watch 赤壁, the movie [according to John Woo himself from Wiki] which would use primarily the historical record Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms as a blueprint for the Battle of Red Cliffs, rather than the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. As such, traditionally vilified characters such as Cao Cao and Zhou Yu will be given a more historically accurate treatment in the film. To which I say... Rubbish! My mom claims it's still been dramatised so.. O well.=D It was a good movie and I really enjoyed it, whether it's historically accurate or not.

The film has an outstanding cast made of a mix of actors from China and Japan:
Tony Leung Chiu-Wai as Zhou Yu 周瑜
Takeshi Kaneshiro as Zhuge Liang 诸葛亮
Zhang Fengyi as Cao Cao 曹操
Chang Chen as Sun Quan 孙权
Zhao Wei as Sun Shangxiang
Hu Jun as Zhao Yun 赵云
Lin Chi-ling as Xiao Qiao 小乔
Nakamura Shido as Gan Xing (甘興) (based on Gan Ning)
You Yong as Liu Bei 刘备
[from Wikipedia]
There are a dozen other characters but you'll probably fall asleep reading through the whole list so..

Anyway, the movie is great! It's exciting, keeps you interested and is shot well with lots of nice camera angles.=) I really didn't like some of the battle scenes though. I know it's a movie about the war between the 3 kingdoms but GOSH.. They wasted so many packets of fake blood! =( Those were the pretty commercialised Hollywood bits I guess.. Along with the whole "epic computer generated scenes".=P But some of the scenes were cool because you got to see their fabulous generals being all cool and everything on the battle field!! HAHA.=P かっこいい!

And of course, everything got better when Takeshi and Tony Leung appeared. ;) MWAHAHA. Ahem. I think they are very good actors. Chang Chen too! ^_^

Okay. Where was I?

The plot was good, fast-paced and exciting, it was full of plotting, fighting and strategizing. ^_^ I realized that I really like these strategic period war films.=P Haha.. Without the use of modern technology, they come up with so many brilliant ways of fighting and seeking an advantage over their enemy. [Code Geass has brilliant stuff too but in a more modern context..] The fantastic cast held the show together and had great chemistry among them as they plotted and schemed. I have a feeling Takeshi and Tony Leung find their partnership rewarding because this isn't the first time they are collaborating in a film. I really enjoyed the whole film and was terribly annoyed when it ended, reminding the audience of part 2 coming soon.

On the aesthetics side, the camera angles used and the soundtrack as well as the rich settings and costumes all added on to the grandiose feeling of the film. The epic scale was well-depicted from the luxurious palaces and sumptuous clothing of the characters to the computer-generated battlefields and even to the massive numbers of soldiers [aka Stuntmen] they had to employ. I liked their filming angles because they were rather interesting though I thought the scene where Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang were playing the qin and they freeze-framed some parts were very strange.=S The music chosen [and composed by a Japanese composer] wasn't traditionally Chinese yet retained an Asian influence which I liked very much.=) I'm quite the sucker for movie soundtracks so do forgive me.

The ambitions of the ancient people are scary to say the very least.. If they don't like you and they have enough power, off your head goes! And of course, as Zhao Wei's character reiterated, women at that time were treated like pawns in a political game, moved around at the convenience of political alliances.

This really reminds of my Fuurin Kazan which was also set during a warring period in Japan. =) The similarities are astounding and very fascinating considering both countries are so close to each other and yet also are culturally dissimilar. They all follow ancient warring methods devised by those horrendously geniusy people in China and utilize similar weaponry: cavalry, spears, cannons, arrows, swords. Hmm. I guess the last bit would apply to all armies at that time. Haha.=X But it's surprisingly similar. And very interesting to watch..

All in all, I really liked 赤壁 and am looking forward to the second installment! =D Hopefully they show it in the US because the effects can only really be seen on a cinema screen.. =D =D =D And the next episode features Zhuge Liang's [acted by Takeshi] machinations!!! Yummy.=D

O dear just saw this on wiki:

The film is expected to be released in two versions: within Asia, Red Cliff is to be released in two parts totaling over four hours in length, with the first part premiering in July 2008 and the second in January 2009. Outside of Asia, a single 2½ hour film will be released in January 2009.

=( Looks like I'll have to buy the DVD!!!

We went to PS Cafe for lunch and it's brilliant.=D On the expensive side, but brilliant. Thankfully the food and ambience were good, because I was REALLY annoyed when they told me no photos allowed.-_-"

cheers

Midweek Men: Japanese Bassist Week!

Hello!

It's time for another edition of Midweek Men! ^_^ Let us review our past few chapters:

Week 1: Hyun Bin (Snow Queen), Daniel Henney (My Name is Kim Sam Soon), Miyavi and Mr Rabbit
Week 2: Lelouch (Code Geass), Tom Schilling (NAPOLA), Saga (alice nine.) and Mr Rabbit
Week 3: Tachibana Keita (w-inds.), Terashima Nobu (NANA), hyde/HYDE (L'arc~En~Ciel) and Mr Rabbit
Week 4: Initial D Special! Edison Chen, Shawn Yue, Jay Chou
Week 5: American Music Special! Christ Brown, Adam Levine (Maroon 5), Justin Timberlake, Mr Bunny

And so this week, because I am totally biased and I really cannot get over how good Saga looks, we're going to have Japanese Bassist Week featuring HOT! bassists from Jrock bands. =D =D =D

So for the first time, Saga is featured AGAIN! because he fits into this category and hello. He is goodlooking. You can't deny it..xD xD xD BEAMS.

Saga is the bassist of the visual kei band alice nine. which comprises of 4 other members [vocals, drums, 2 guitars]. He composes and mixes the music for the band and collaborates with the other members to produce that unique alice nine. sound. At home, he has a dog and in the alice nine. blogs appears to go out with NAO often to eat ramen. ^_^

alice nine. holds annual tours in Summer and occasionally over the Christmas and New Year period. Signed on to PS Company, alice nine. has just released their PV collection on 2 DVDs, including never-before-seen videos of 月光浴 (Gekkouyoku) and 春夏秋冬 (Shunkashuutou) and also a new single will be out in August entitled "RAINBOWS".

Next up we have REITA from The GazettE!

The GazettE comprises 5 members: Ruki, Uruha, Aoi, Reita, and Kai with the same band layout as alice nine.. They are also signed on to PS Company and release heavy visual kei tracks on their albums. Reita is famed for never showing his nose, covering it with a band of cloth, handkerchief, or something similar, and his skill at the bass.

The GazettE has released 3 top selling albums and 1 compilation album in their career so far. Their latest single is 紅蓮 (Guren) and the PV, as with all their other videos, contains rich imagery. They are supposed to be releasing a single soon, and with their "Stacked Rubbish" tour DVD being released in August, I can't wait to see what else they will have!

Finally, we have Toshiya from Dir en grey!

Originally part of the visual kei scene, Dir en grey members have adopted less flamboyant attire in recent years but remain a solid member of the jrock genre. However, they are one of the most famous jrock bands on the international level and has gained a great following in Europe and USA.

Dir en grey has released only 6 albums in their entire career but sales have done extremely well worldwide. I can't claim to know much about them but I do know that they make terrific music.

And finally, since no one can resist the charms of Bunny-san, let me introduce to you Kapibara-san's friend!

Please, ride on the wind and ring the daybreak's bell (source: http://pieces.deadsunrise.net/laruku/viewtopic.php?t=5591)

Notes: It's probably more accurate to use 面白かった rather than 楽しかった when describing ドラマ but I don't know.. I always feel like 楽しかった conveys the "fun" feeling better.. Haha..

Anyway, I've finished watching 絶対彼氏 (Zettai Kareshi) already!!! Haha.=D The ending is... Not quite what I wanted but I think they managed to bridge the gap quite well... Still.. I think Riiko should end up with Soshi because HELLO when the perfect guy for you is RIGHT THERE, I think you should grab the chance right around NOW. Haha..=P

So I'm trying to finish 風林火山 (Fuurin Kazan), Darker Than Black and Code Geass R2 while my other anime take zillions of years to be released.=D Wee!! I was trying to look for summer doramas to watch but there don't seem to be any so I might just watch あつひめ (Atsuhime) and 大奥 (Ooku). Haha.. Otherwise, I think there's a dorama about the Tokugawa coming out soon so I'm looking forward to that as well!!! =D

I think I need to practice typing more in Japanese.X__X I can feel it dying already..

cheers

Last Friends / ラスト・フレンズ

Hello

I've just finished the drama "Last Friends" (ラスト・フレンズ) starring Ueno Juri (of Nodame fame) as Ruka and Nagasawa Masami as Michiru, the 2 leading stars of the show. They are backed up by an equally strong cast of Eita (also of Nodame fame) as Takeru, Mizukawa Asami (Nodame, Fuurin Kazan) as Eri, Nishikido Ryo (Kanjani 8, Ichi Rittoru no Namida) as the horrible Sosuke and Yamazaki Shigenori as Ogurin! =D

This drama is fantastic. I enjoyed almost every minute of it, except the scenes about domestic violence which was extremely painful to watch because it was so cruel, so horrifying, and terribly real. Abusive relationships should never exist in the first place and if you can't accept that your significant other has other important people in their lives besides your self, you should be a gallant person and let go.-_-"

Anyway, this drama has a great cast who have really good chemistry together, a strong storyline, a marvellous soundtrack [Utada Hikaru's Prisoner of Love is so fitting!] and very nice filming/scene selection.=D The opening scene is really really good and I think it's done extremely well.

The opening title.

The whole series revolves around several characters and I will let DramaWiki take over here:
Last Friends tackles issues that afflict the current generation. Michiru's mother has brought a man back to their home and she is bullied at her workplace where she works as a beauty parlour assistant. She starts cohabiting with her boyfriend, a good young man who works at the Child Welfare Division and the only person who can give her emotional support, but ends up the victim of domestic violence and becomes fearful of love. The boyishly charming Ruka was a classmate of Michiru's in junior high school. She has performed brilliantly as a motocross racer and aims to win the national championship, but as the story progresses, a deep worry that she can neither confide in her parents or close friends grows evident. Takeru is a hair and makeup artist acquainted with Ruka. He is a good confidant to females due to his kindness and perceptiveness, and finds himself attracted to Ruka but has a phobia of sex as a result of a past trauma. The three of them become house mates and through their associations with others, gain the capacity to be positive about life. --jade_frost

Anyway, this series attracted me because it stars Ueno Juri who I REALLY liked in Nodame Cantabile and I've realized that she's an extremely versatile actress because I think she's fantastic in Last Friends despite it being a completely different type of character from Nodame.=) Her onscreen chemistry with her co-stars is amazing as well and shows that when you have a good cast, things just fall into place far more easily. ;)

The fabled red thread of fate is alluded to strongly in the opening sequence with the literal red ribbons intersecting throughout and eventually binding them together as they lie on the white ground. I wonder if this refers to the Japanese concept of 必然 (hitsuzen) which can be intepreted as referring to fate/destiny/inevitability. I guess it's kind of fate how life in the drama threw all these characters together. Michiru and Ruka were linked as best friends from high school, Michiru and Sosuke were linked by meeting at a Government Office, Ruka and Takeru linked by her bumping into him once then meeting him through Eri, and ... I think you get the picture.

I think the opening sequence says a lot about the characters. Firstly, everyone's dressed in white which indicates some kind of purity and innocence. At the same time, it could also be a clean slate, or simply just a nice color to contrast the red ribbons well. But Sosuke is wearing a black tie and is the only character with visibly non-white clothing. Perhaps this is a sign of his horrendousness as a human being. Next, there are these individual scenes where the characters are shot against black backgrounds and words possibly representing their suffering being flashed on screen:
Michiru - Love
Ruka - Liberation
Takeru - Agony
Eri - Solitude
Sosuke - Contradiction

Watch it here:

The drama itself also deals with themes like gender issues about being gay and domestic violence. Both are portrayed starkly though I sometimes cannot understand the reaction of some of the people. Still, I like how they chose to deal with these difficult issues and did so quite successfully, especially with the highly traumatizing domestic violence scenes. Seeing Nishikido Ryo act as the number one on-screen asshole was quite surprising as he had a very different characters in Ichi Rittoru no Namida. His psychotic side was portrayed extremely well and Michiru's utter terror was also captured on film fantastically.=)

My favourite pair though were Ueno Juri and Eita because I felt that they dealt with people misunderstanding them very well. I feel like being homosexual is not something people should shun because I think sometimes no matter what, we should accept people for who they are. They might not have a lifestyle we agree with but that shouldn't be a major issue in terms of accepting the person. =) With so much stigma, it's hard for those who are homosexual to reveal their true feelings and give themselves freedom.

The red thread of fate binds us altogether, pulls us apart and gathers people ever closer.^_^

I highly recommend this drama. And I'm going to finish Zettai Kareshi soon! Haha..=P

Today I made cheesecake and we had tea.^_^ I could do it more often!

cheers
